Part 1: The Two Dead Girls-Chapters 1-3

The novel starts off talking about 1932 when the state penitentiary was at Cold Mountain. The narrator introduces the electric chair, also. The electric chair was known as "Old Sparky," or "the Big Juicy." We learn that the narrator of this story is Paul Edgecombe, the E Block super. He describes the penitentiary and tells about some of the people there and their stories. However, there is one man who he is particularly interested in. John Coffey, a black "montsrous" man, who is 6'8" and more than 300 lbs. John Coffey is accompanied to his cell by two guards, Harry Terwilliger and Percy Wetmore. Percy gives Coffey a hard time as their own their way down saying, "Dead man walking." Paul is irritated with him and tells him to go somewhere. Paul has an oppurtunity to talk to him briefly. Coffey was very intriguing to him and after Paul leaves, he goes to the prison library to look for some newspaper articles or more information on him.
The story is interesting so far but I am very anxious to see more about John Coffey. I am predicting that there is a long story behind this man and he obviously committed a very serious crime.
